The foundation of alt-J was formed at the University of Leeds, which eventually lead to the  formation of the band in 2012. During that same year the band gained popularity with their debut album An Awesome Wave, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. The band, consisting of vocalist and guitarist Joe Newman, keyboardist and vocalist Gus Unger-Hamilton and drummer Thom Green, is known for their alternative electronic interpretation of guitar pop. Not only have they been nominated for various awards, but the band is also seen on many international festival stages and venues. With popular singles such as ‘Breezeblocks’, ‘Fitzpleausre’ and ‘Left Hand Free’ alt-J is very loved, yet still unique sound in the indie pop genre.

Alt-J released their first new music in over four years last week. The band proves to have kept busy since their break in 2019. Although the fourth album, called The Dream, was recorded during the pandemic it is not necessarily a product of it. The album talks about subjects from true crime to love and from Coca Cola to cryptocurrency. Each song is set to a different theme and is open to everyone’s own interpretation. The song ‘Get Better’ does clearly reference the pandemic, however, dark themes such as falling in love and losing love have always been a part of the band’s discography. With a fitting mix of experimental and emotional songs, alt-J truly shows their new found energy with The Dream, making it the fullest sounding alt-J record to date. Expect an exciting and varied show from the trio on 24 November 2022 in AFAS Live; the venue that, after previously sold out shows, offers the perfect stage for the distinct alt-J.
